“Soler Power” keys Miami to a victory over the Mets

Jorge Soler made his first start of the year in right field last night for Miami and was key in the fish’s victory over the visiting New York Mets. The powerful Cuban not only went yard in the second inning, but also made a couple of immaculate plays in the outfield to pace the hometown Marlins in their 2-1 victory over the visitors from Gotham.

In total the Cuban collected two hits and scored on another occasion. Two games into the season the Havana born outfielder is hitting a robust .375. Yuli Gurriel also made his regular season debut for Miami and went one for three. Miami plays the third game of a four game set with the Mets today at loanDepot with Edwar Cabrera taking the hill for the natives.

Yoan Moncada went three for four with a run knocked in, but his efforts were not enough to save Chicago from their first defeat of the young season last night 6-3 at the hands of the Houston Astros. The Texans were paced by a key base loaded clearing double in the eighth inning by Yordan Álvarez that gave the team from space city a 5-3 lead and from then never looked back. The man from Las Tunas, Cuba has now knocked in fours in his first two games to open the season.

Although he took his first loss of the young campaign Miami-born Nick Martinez threw seven strong innings in San Diego’s setback at the hands of Colorado 4-1. The Cuban-American scattered six hits over the duration of his start and also retired five via the K for the Friars. Though he had a rough first inning were he allowed two runs Martínez buckled down an only allowed two runs over the next five stanzas.
