Víctor Mesa Jr had arguably his best day as pro in Pensacola’s loss to Birmingham 10-4. The youngest of the Mesa clan hit for cycle in five at-bats, drove in two runs and scored two times to account for basically all of the Blue Wahoos’ (AA) offense on the evening. The outfielder becomes only the second person in team’s history to hit for the cycle. Mesa is now hitting .395 on the young season and has sterling 1.147 OPS.
In Advanced A Geisel Cepeda, the cousin of the great Frederich Cepeda hit his first longball as a professional in second inning of Hickory’s 5-3 loss to Bowling Green. The outfielder from Sancti Spíritus, Cuba is hitting a robust .300 on the season and might be beckoning for a call-up to AA.
Also in High A, Alexander Vargas went yard for the first time on the season, knocked in two runs and scored on two occasions to lead Hudson Valley to 8-2 victory over Rome. Although he had a good day at the plate Vargas is still hitting a paltry .167 on the campaign.
