Another Cuban is called up to the majors.

The Atlanta Braves announced a series of roster changes this Sunday morning, one of the being the call-up right-hander Daysbel Hernandez to the big leagues. In a corresponding move, right-hander Jesse Chavez was placed on the 60-day disabled list. Right-hander Allan Winans was optioned to Triple-A after last night’s game, this created room for Hernandez on the active roster.

The hurler from Pinar del Río, Cuba has made a spectacular comeback from Tommy John in 2023. He began rehabilitation in Class A+ (Rome) and his excellent results led him to be promoted on July 15 from Double A (Mississippi Braves) to Triple A (Gwinnett Stripers).

In this last game in Triple A, the 26-year-old pitched 1.2 innings, recording all five outs via strikeout in his team’s (Gwinnett Stripers) 5-1 loss against the Norfolk Tides (Orioles). Hernández signed with the Atlanta on September 14, 2017, for a bonus of $190,000.

This season in the minors the flamethrowing righty has a record of 3-0, 2.05 earned run average, a WHIP of 0.86 and two saves. Hernández has also struck out 32 batters in 22 innings giving him a SO9 of 13.9 on the campaign. Opponents are only hitting .109 against the Cuban. With his call-up Hernández becomes the 26th Cuban to see action on the season and 386 all-time.
