Rubi Silva: ” It is always a blessing to have your countrymen on the same team.”

Rubi Silva is an experienced and talented hitter in the Caribbean circuits. The utilityman has seen action in the Mexican, Venezuelan and Nicaraguan leagues. After a stupendous winter in Nicaragua Silva returns to the Liga Mexicana de Béisbol with the Conspiradores de Querétaro.

The ex-Cubs prospect hit .313 with two longballs, 20 runs batted in, two stolen bases and slashed .343/.440/.783 last winter with the Tigres de Chinandega of the Nicaraguan Winter League. Silva has also been a standout in the Atlantic League and saw plenty of action in the minors with Chicago.

In five minor league seasons with the Cubs Silva slashed .282/.305/.429/.734 with 42 homeruns, 97 doubles, 41 triples and 258 RBIs. With a roster chock-full of Cuban talent expect Querétaro to surprise plenty of teams this year in the LMB.

What have you worked on during the offseason?

First of all, thank you for the interview. Well, in the offseason I have been working on my physique, also did lot of work on my legs, my shoulders. Basically that’s what I have been focusing on, because it’s part of what it takes to play this game.

Sometimes the level of the Nicaraguan league is a little underestimated. Tell me a little about the level of that league.

It’s a very good league. Honestly, it is not a league comparable to the Dominican Republic, Mexico or Venezuela, but it is a league that has a lot of talent. It is a country that is now ascending in that sport and I think that many people have already gone to try their luck there. Some have done well, others average and others poorly, but for me personally it is a good league.

You return to the Mexican Baseball League, your first year with Querétaro. Do you already have a defined role in the team?

Well, look: as you say, it’s my first year with that team. It’s a new franchise. I think my role is, first of all, to be healthy, both physically and mentally with myself. And the second thing is that it is no secret to anyone that what I play is outfield and second base. I’m going to be where the team needs me, but as far as I understand what I’m going to play is center field.

Several Cubans have signed with that team. Does the fact that you are going to be with more of your countrymen there make you feel more comfortable?

It is always a blessing to have your countrymen on the same team. I think it’s always good to have one or another around us.

Any goals for Mexico this year?

Stay healthy physically and mentally. That is the most important.
