Ex-University of Miami and Los Angeles Angels pitcher Greg Veliz has signed with the Rieleros de Aguacalientes and will report to the team today. Veliz was impressive in camp this spring with the Leones de Yucatán, but due to the team’s immense pitching depth he was released by the squad. The hurler is represented by Gladys Alonso of A&F Sports.
The Cuban-American right-hander spent three seasons in the halos farm system compiling a 5-4 record in 40 outings as a relief pitcher reaching as high as A+ ball before his release in 2022 by the ballclub. In 57 ⅔ innings Veliz had a 4.68 and fanned 70, all while saving two games.
Last season the hurler spent his time in the Frontier League with the Tri-City Valley Cats posting a 6-2 record, 3.91 earned run average, 1.18 WHIP and 54 strikeouts in 50 innings pitched. Veliz can also spot start if necessary starting 15 games during his time at UM.

During his college days in South Florida he was a key member of the Hurricanes’ pitching corps, doing a little bit of everything. Veliz had an 8-6 record, 3.05 ERA and also saved 8 games in 121IP for the squad from Coral Gables. With a strong showing in Aguascalientes the righty might just be able to make an impression on international and big league scouts possibly leading to better things down the road.
“I’m super excited to have the chance to go back to Mexico after being there in Spring Training and seeing that environment. I’m fired up. It took a lot of sending video and you know contacting different teams and just working on my end with Gladys (Alonso), you too just everyone working and trying to help me out. I really appreciate it .”said Veliz about his future incorporation to the Rieleros roster.
Veliz was also very excited about the opportunity at hand, “I’m glad I got the opportunity to go back and show what I can do on the mound. Very excited , very grateful and excited for the opportunity I have at hand.”
