The New York Mets have called up Cuban infielder José Iglesias, the team brought the ex-big leaguer from Syracuse (AAA) in an onslaught of moves after the Jorge López situation. There is grand possibility that Iglesias started at second base in tonight’s ball game against the Diamondbacks.
Last season the 34-year-old saw action in the Padres farm system slashing. 317/.356/.537/.892 in 28 games at El Paso (AAA). Iglesias becomes the 28th Cuban to see action in the big leagues this season. This spring native of Mayabeque, Cuba hit .282 but was still optioned to the minors by squad from Gotham.
In 2022 Iglesias had one his best years at the plate with the Rockies slashing .292/.328/.380/.708, with 128 hits, 30 doubles, three home runs and 47 RBIs. In the majors, Iglesias has 11 seasons experience experience with six different teams (Boston, Detroit, Baltimore, Reds, Angels and Colorado). He also has swatted over 1,000 hits in MLB (1,051) and presents a very respectable slash line for a shortstop (.279/.319/.382/.701).
