Néstor Cortés tossed five innings of 5 ⅓ innings of three-hit, three-run ball to notch his fifth victory of the season in the Yankees’ 6-5 win over the Phillies. The Cuban right-hander also fanned six and his ERA fell to 4.16 on the season. Cortés has struck out 122 in 129 ⅔ innings on the campaign.
In a loss Nick Castellanos swatted two hits in four trips to the plate and knocked in four runs to help Philadelphia’s cause. The slugger has now driven 57 runs on the season and is hitting a solid .296 over the last month.
Adrián Morejón struck out the only batter he faced in a ⅓ of an inning pitched in relief during the Padres’ 8-1 thrashing of the Dodgers. The hard-throwing reliever has a 2.67 earned run average on the season. The lefty has easily been one of the most effective relievers for San Diego this year.
