Raidel Martínez makes history in a Chunichi win. (+Asian League Report)

Raidel Martínez notched his 43rd save of the campaign after tossing a scoreless ninth in a relief inning during the Chunichi Dragons’ 4-3 victory over the Hiroshima Carps. The right-hander from Pinar del Río, Cuba established a new record for saves in a season for a Latino and also saw his ERA descend to 1.11, while alone mathematically securing the Central League saves title.

Martínez has quietly become the best reliever in the NPB saving 165 games over his seven year career in the circuit. The flamethrowing Cuban more than 30 saves in three straight campaigns and has a career 1.72 earned run average.

In a minor league game with Chunichi veteran slugger Dayán Viciedo collected two hits in three trips to the plate and knocked in the only run for Chunichi in their second team’s 2-1 loss to the Orix Buffaloes’ top farm team. Viciedo is now hitting .296 on the season and driven in 30 runs.
