In what has been an eventful Winter League season for Cubans two more Cubans have distinguished themselves in these leagues and earned player of the week honors in their respective circuits. Right-hander Miguel Romero of the Gigantes de Rivas and Yasmany Tomás of the Cañeros de Los Mochis have earned these awards over the past week.
During the six games taken into account last week, Tomás had nine hits in 23 at-bats (.391), slugged three longballs, also scored four runs and drove in eight runs and received walked once. This season in Mexican Winter League during Tomás has played in 44 games with a league leading 11 homeruns, 35 runs batted and is slashing .291/.494/.785. The Cuban slugger was the League MVP during the 2022-23 season with these same Cañeros de Los Mochis.
Romero by his own accord made two starts last week in the LBPN notching a win over that span. In 11 innings pitched last week the hurler has posted an 0.82 earned run average and fanned eight batters. After struggling in the LVBP and being released by the Tiburones de La Guaira Romero has found his niche in the Nicaraguan Winter League. The righty could be a valuable edition to a team in the Round Robin if the Gigantes do not qualify for the postseason.
