Among the Cuban players, Yoanner Negrín stands out as a key veteran on the mound. At 40 years old, Negrín’s career has spanned leagues in Venezuela and Mexico, where his consistent performance has made him one of Spain’s most reliable pitchers. His leadership and wealth of experience will be essential for Spain as they navigate the challenges of the qualifiers.
Elián Leyva, 35, also brings significant experience to the team. Having played in Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Taiwan’s CPBL, Leyva is no stranger to top-level competition. Pablo Guillén, 26, brings fresh energy to Spain’s pitching staff. After stints in the Venezuelan Winter League and Italy, Guillén is ready to step into an important role for Spain. His recent performances on the international stage show he is more than capable of competing at a high level and will be an important piece in Spain’s efforts to secure a place in the WBC.
Orlando Rodríguez, 29, offers versatility and depth to the pitching staff. With experience across multiple leagues, including Puerto Rico, Mexico, and the American Association Independent League, Rodríguez has shown his ability to adapt to different playing environments. His flexibility will allow Spain to use him in various situations, strengthening the team’s pitching options.
In the outfield, Frank Hernández, 23, and Félix Stevens, 25, will provide youthful energy and potential for Spain. Hernández, who posted a .242 batting average in the Cubs’ Single-A system, and Stevens, who hit .237 between High-A and Double-A, both bring offensive promise and will look to make their mark in the qualifiers. Stevens saw action this winter with Carolina of the LBPRC and has been scouted by at least one ballclub in Asia.
Guiding the team from the dugout will be Néstor Pérez, the Cuban-born bench coach who has been with Spain’s coaching staff for several years. Pérez, who managed the FLC Braves in 2023 and 2024, played a pivotal role in Spain’s European Championship win last October. His experience and leadership will be invaluable as Spain looks to replicate that success on the world stage.
Spain’s roster is primed for a strong push toward a place in the 2025 World Baseball Classic.
