Yoennis Yera: “We’re focused on winning the championship.”

On Saturday, March 4, the Olmecas de Tabasco began Spring Training, and Cuban hurler Yoennis Yera joined the team on the very first day. This 2025 season will be his fourth consecutive season wearing the Olmecas uniform in the Liga Mexicana de Béisbol (LMB).

Over his three previous seasons, he has accumulated 13 wins and nine losses in 45 games pitched (42 as a starter). He has a total of 215 strikeouts and 81 walks and 216.⅔ innings pitched, he has a 3.50 ERA, while also allowed 205 hits for an opponent’s on-base percentage of .132.

During the 2022 campaign, the left-handed posted eight wins and only had two losses in 17 starts, including a no-hitter against the Generales de Durango. It was only the second by an Olmecas pitcher and the seventh by a Cuban in the LMB. In the 2024 season, Yera had a record one win of 1-4 in 15 games pitched (12 of them as a starter) and a 4.82 ERA in 61.2 innings of work. In a recent interview with journalist Otto López, Yera discussed the team’s goals for this centennial season in the Mexican circuit, amongst other topics.

You’ve been with the club for several seasons, an organization that has contributed to your growth in Mexican baseball. Are you even more committed to the club in 2025?

I’m back for another season, I’m preparing well for the upcoming season. I feel good physically and mentally, and here we are.

What do you think of Willy Romero as Olmecas’ manager this year?

I think he’s fine as our manager. We just have to focus on our jobs and keep moving forward.

How comfortable are you as a starter with Olmecas?

Not bad at all. I’m used to this job, and thank God everything has gone well for me so far in this league.

How do you see the team for 2025?

We’re currently practicing the pitchers, catchers, and some players. We’re focused on one goal: qualifying for the playoffs first and then winning the league championship.
