Vladimir Gutierrez has reported to the Pericos de Puebla for the second year in a row to be part of the team’s rotation. After being released by the Red Sox last season he signed with the Mexican team posting a 4-2 record, 5.40 earned run average and fanned 39 in 40 innings pitched.
This winter the right-hander from Pinar del Río, Cuba saw action with the Águilas Cibaeñas of the LIDOM having a 3-3 record and 4.23 ERA. The ex-big leaguer pitched with the Cincinnati Reds and Miami Marlins on the grand stage. During his three seasons in the majors the hurler had a 10-12 record with a 5.47 earned run average in 30 starts.
In 154⅔ innings pitched in MLB he struck out 121 batters and a 1.52 WHIP. The righty will be a top of the rotation starter with Puebla and with a good showing could draw interest from teams in Asia. Gutierrez combines a high to mid 90’s fastball with an array of above-average breaking pitches.
