April 4th marked the start of the Advanced A ball regular season in the Minor League Baseball system. This Monday, the awards for the best players of the week were announced, with Cuban Lázaro Montes standing out the most for the Everett AquaSox of Northwest League.
The Seattle Mariners’ number two prospect (ranked 41st in MLB) has started the campaign in full swing. In just three games played to date, he has three hits in seven at-bats (.429) with a triple, a home run and has driven in two runs, while scoring four times on the season.
He has also drawn five walks and stolen a base in as many attempts over the first week. Opposing pitchers have only retired him twice via the strikeout, and his OPS is an astronomical 1.835. Montes has undoubtedly been spectacular to start the season, which made the slugger the Player of the Week in the Class Advanced A ball of the Northwest League.
With a good showing to start the season Montes could be promoted to Double-A in the near future. This spring the native of Havana had an impressive showing cementing himself as an up-and-coming prospect with Mariners. The outfielder is slashing .292/.418/.531/.949 with 45 longballs and 209 RBIs in four years in the team’s farm system.
