Adrián Morejón: “I’ve been with this organization for almost 10 years and I’ve always felt supported.”

Adrián Morejón has matured as a pitcher in his in his seventh big league season. The left-hander who was once a starter has converted himself into one of the best relievers in baseball and it led him to All-Star Game berth.

In 49 appearances this season he sports an 8-4 record, 1.76 earned run average, 14 holds, two saves and  two saves. In 46 innings pitched he has fanned 45 batters and sports a nifty 0.78 WHIP, while opponents hit a paltry .165 against the southpaw.

On the other hand Morejón recently declined to participate with Cuba in the upcoming World Baseball Classic, one of many loses for the communist island in the tournament which takes place this March in Puerto Rico. For what’s left of the expect the hurler to continue to be a key of the San Diego bullpen.

Fresh off the All-Star Game, what did that experience mean to you?

It was a dream, truly. I think being in the All-Star Game is something any player always wants. It was only two days, but I took away a lot of good memories. Being able to spend time with so many important players, including those from the American League, was a huge pleasure.

Was it something you dreamed of since you began your professional career?

Not really. At that time. My goal was to reach the Major Leagues, but the All-Star dream came later. Two or three years ago, when I established myself and saw I could compete at that level I then set that as a goal.

Did your presence at the event speak volumes about how well your season has gone.

It’s all been a result of the work I’ve been doing since last year. I brought with me the good things I achieved in 2024, combined them with what I learned in the offseason, and continued to work hard mentally. I think that’s been the key to the consistency I’ve had all these months.

You’ve been through injuries and difficult times. How important has it been to put that past behind you emotionally?

A lot. The change I’ve undergone from last year until now has been complete. I haven’t forgotten what I experienced, because no one can erase that, but it no longer affects me. I’m prepared, physically and mentally, for whatever comes next. I know things can happen on the field, but I’m no longer worried about it.

What role has the team played in this entire maturation process?

A very important one. I’ve been with this organization for almost 10 years and I’ve always felt supported. That trust has motivated me to keep going, to not give up, and to work hard to be where I am today.

Do you feel this could be the year to take the big step for San Diego?

Hopefully. We go out to compete every year; we’ve been close, but it just hasn’t happened. This year we may not have as many names, but the group is united, putting in the work, making sacrifices and that shows in the results.
