Alexander Vargas, recently released by the Yankees, has signed as a minor league free agent with the Cincinnati Reds and placed in Class A Advanced as per the report by the colleague Francys Romero. Vargas who is 23 years of age was the Yankees’ marquee signing in the 2018–2019 international season, receiving a $2.5 million bonus.
This spring Vargas was the talk of camp with the Bronx Bombers hitting .571 with three homeruns , seven runs batted in and slashed .600/1.357/1.957. The infielder started the season between A+ and AA ball he is hitting .225 with seven roundtrippers and 35 runs batted in. A few months ago the young Cuban declared his intentions to play for his country in the upcoming World Baseball Classic.
Vargas was selected as the Player of the Week in late June in the South Atlantic League with Hudson Valley Renegades (+A) when he slashed 545/.565/.727/1.302, hit a longball, drove in three and scored four times during the week. Expect the middle infielder to finish the season in the minors and earn a Spring Training invite next season.
