Lourdes Gurriel Jr launched his 18th homer of the season off Andrew Abbott. The Cuban slugger was a key bat in Arizona’s 10-1 thrashing of the Cincinnati Reds. Gurriel now has 28 runs batted in during the month of August leading all of MLB.
Adolis García went yard for the 17th time on the season, a two-run fifth inning homerun to do his part in the Rangers 10-0 shutout of Cleveland. The power-hitting outfielder has now driven in 66 runs on the campaign.
Luis Robert swatted his 14th homer of the season and scored twice of the day in four trips to the plate during the White Sox’s 7-3 win over Minnesota. The “Panther ” as he is known by the Cuban faithful now hits .313 over the last month.
Miguel Vargas also got in on the act with two hits and drove in a run with a second inning bases loaded walk. The native of Havana saw his average rise to .233 and has knocked in 48 runs on the season. With his 28 doubles Vargas leads all Cubans in the majors in that statistical category.
Andy Ibáñez swatted an eighth inning pinch-hit solo-homerun to seal a Detroit Tigers 4-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals. The infielder has now homered four times on the season and hits a robust .368 since the All-Star break.
