The Cuban presence continues to carry significant weight in the best baseball in the world. Cuba ranks as the third country (outside the USA) with the highest representation on MLB Opening Day 2026. Of the 247 players born outside the United States who appear on Opening Day rosters, 20 are Cuban—trailing only the Dominican Republic (93) and Venezuela (60).
Although Cuba is a country that is closed off to Major League Baseball 34 islanders saw action on the grand stage last season. Ten players of Cuban descent led by Rookie of the Year candidate Sal Stewart Jr have made Opening Day rosters as well. With the return of Yordan Álvarez from injury and with continual excellence of Aroldis Chapman on the mound, expect an exciting season from Cubans once again in 2026.
With a changing political situation and the continuance of defections by Cubans in the minor categories will only expand the country’s presence in MLB. The abundance of Cubans will only continue to grow on the grand stage. Expect to see names like Kevin Álvarez, Yandel Ricardo and Lázaro Montes only expand on that legacy in the future.
