The Athletics have decided to send Cuban right-hander Luis Danys Morales down to Triple-A following a rough start to his season in the Major Leagues. In two outings, he posted an ERA of 12.27 (7.1 IP; 10 ER) and was allowing nearly three baserunners per inning (WHIP: 2.86). He had issued eight walks, and opposing batters were hitting .394 against him.
The pitcher was in the midst of his second season in the Majors, following a successful debut in 2025. On that occasion, he posted a 4-3 record in 10 appearances (nine starts), with a 3.14 ERA over 48.2 innings, 43 strikeouts, 18 walks, and a WHIP of 1.15.
His first appearance of the season took place on March 29, when he took the loss against the Toronto Blue Jays, surrendering five runs and three home runs over 4.1 innings. He fared even worse in his most recent outing, on Saturday, April 4, against the Houston Astros. Once again, he was the losing pitcher; over three innings, he was battered for eight hits and five runs, while also displaying alarming lack of control by recording zero strikeouts and issuing six walks.
Now the hurler will attempt to regain his command and fine-tune his mechanics with the Las Vegas Aviators in Triple-A—a team that also features fellow Cuban Yunior Tur. Right-handed reliever Joel Kuhnel was promoted to the MLB roster following Morales’ reassignment. The organization has not yet decided who will fill the vacant spot left by the Cuban pitcher in the starting rotation.
