Víctor Mesa Jr swatted two triples in three trips to the plate, drove in a run and scored a run to do his part during Tampa Bay’s 4-0 blanking of the Colorado Rockies. The outfielder now becomes now the first Cuban to hit two triples in a game since Adeiny Hechavarría did it in 2014.
Nick Martínez in his own right pitched an impeccable 5⅔ innings in which he only surrendered six hits and struck out six batters. The Cuban-American righty saw his earned run average descend to 2.65 on the campaign.
Yordan Álvarez laced a run-scoring single in the bottom of the tenth, but it wasn’t enough to prevent an Astros’ 5-4 loss to the Toronto Bluejays. The Cuban saw his average fall to .329 and augmented his league leading RBI to 85 on the season. Álvarez is cementing his place as the leading candidate for American League Most Valuable Player.
