Miguel Vargas was named American League Player of the Week for the week of after batting .348 (8-for-23) with three home runs, nine RBIs and eight walks across seven games.
With his election, Vargas and Víctor Mesa Jr. are the first pair of Cuban-born players to be named Players of the Week in consecutive weeks since 2018, when Yuli Gurriel and Yasiel Puig accomplished the feat.
On the year the third baseman from Havana is slashing .251/.362/.482/.845 with 33 homeruns, 88 runs batted in, 20 stolen bases and an OPS plus of 135. The young slugger also secured his first All-Star selection and even homered during the game.
Vargas has quietly become the leader of a young and talented team that is holding down the last playoff heading into the last seven games of the season. Expect the talented infielder to be a cornerstone of that team for years to come.
