Yordan Álvarez has moved one step closer to adding an American League MVP Award to his résumé. The Houston Astros slugger was announced as one of three finalists for the honor, joining Junior Caminero and Bobby Witt Jr. The winner will be revealed on November 12, with Álvarez entering the announcement as a leading contender following an exceptional 2026 campaign.
The Cuban hitter finished the regular season with a .316 batting average, .432 on-base percentage and .601 slugging percentage, producing a 1.033 OPS. He also collected 179 hits, belted 42 home runs, drove in 106 runs and scored 105 times. Those numbers reflect the weight of his offensive contribution. Álvarez combined power with the ability to hit for average and reach base consistently, giving Houston a dangerous presence in the middle of its lineup.
His 42 home runs provided the most visible measure of that power, but his .432 on-base percentage was equally central to his production. Opposing pitchers had to contend with a hitter capable of changing a game with one swing while also reaching base at an elite rate. Finishing with more than 100 runs scored and 100 RBIs further illustrated his impact. Álvarez helped create scoring opportunities and delivered the extra-base damage needed to bring teammates home.
His season has already earned recognition from fellow major leaguers. At the Players Choice Awards, Álvarez was selected as the American League’s Outstanding Player and Comeback Player, adding two honors to his case for the league’s top individual award. The Outstanding Player distinction carries particular significance because it reflects the judgment of the players who compete against him. The Comeback Player recognition adds another dimension to a season defined by both production and renewed prominence.
The MVP vote presents a separate decision, with Caminero and Witt also among the three finalists. For Álvarez, however, the combination of a batting average above .300, 42 home runs and an OPS exceeding 1.000 offers a compelling offensive résumé. Now the Cuban slugger awaits the November 12 announcement, hoping to cap an already decorated campaign with the American League’s highest regular-season individual honor.
