More than 180 Cubans will be within the MLB/MiLB organizational structure to commence 2023

Yesterday a new Major League season began and a total of 20 players born in Cuba appeared on MLB rosters to commence the year. Rookie sensation Óscar Luis Colas who hasn’t stopped hitting since he started his career last year in Advanced A and made his MLB debut with the WhiteSox after an excellent spring. The native of Santiago de Cuba collected his first MLB hit in first at bat in the seventh inning of last night’s game.

Along with Colás there were be three other Cubans on Chicago’s roster (Yasmani Grandal, Luis Robert, Yóan Moncada) to start the season. The defending champion Houston Astros boasted José Abreu and Yordan Álvarez potent bats in their lineup yesterday and opened the season with a 3-2 loss at home against Chicago in spite of Álvarez’s monster homerun in the ninth inning of the game.

Tampa Bay will opened the season Randy Arozarena and Yandy Díaz on their roster and their neighbor to the south the Miami Marlins sported Yuli Gurriel and Jorge Soler within their ranks.

Five Cuban pitchers earned spots on big league staffs this season, they are Néstor Cortés (Yankees), Cionel Pérez (Orioles), Aroldis Chapman (Kansas City Royals), Johan Oviedo (Pirates) and Adrián Morejón (Padres). No Cuban hurler had the pleasure of making an Opening Day start this season, the last Cuban to start on Opening Day was José Fernández in 2014 with Miami.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (Dbacks), Aledmys Díaz (Athletics) and Adolis García (Rangers) figure to be key bats for their teams this season. Shortstop José Barrero started on Opening Day for the Cincinnat Reds and Miguel Vargas played second yesterday for the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 2022, Cuba set the record for the its largest amount of player gracing the majors in a season with 33 players, a feat that looks a bit out of reach in 2023.

Although some prospects like Yosver Zulueta, Cesar Prieto, Pedro León, Malcom Núñez, Bryan Ramos and Yoelqui Céspedes could debut in the “Show” this season; in addition to some players who have already been there, such as Roenis Elías, José Iglesias and Yadiel Hernández that could see action on the grand stage, this would give Cuba an outside chance of reaching that mark during the season if it all feel into place.

Below is a list of all the Cuban players within the MLB/MiLB organizational structure and what club they are signed with to start the season, at the moment there are 185 Cubans with organizations, a figure that could get even closer to 200 before the end of 2023.
