Onelki García last saw action in preparation for the World Baseball Classic and in the actual tournament with Cuba in March. Last night the native of Guantánamo, Cuba took the mound last night for the defending Mexican League Champions, the Leones de Yucatán.
Although Onelki García did not have his best night, pitching 4⅔ innings where he gave up three earned runs via six hits and struck out five. The southpaw did not factor in the felines 8-4 victory over the Bravos de León.
Fellow Cuban and WBC participant Yadir Drake also did his part collecting a hit in four at-bats, driving in a run and drawing a walk for the team from coast. Lázaro Alonso also saw action for Yucatán drawing a walk in his only trip to the plate as a pinch-hitter.
The two teams will play game 2 of their series tonight at 9:30 PM at Parque Domingo Santana in León. For the Bravos Cuban righty Lázaro Blanco will take the mound, while fellow right-hander Jake Thompson will toe the rubber for Yucatán.
