Elian Leyva continues to shine in Taiwan (+Asian League Report)

Although he didn’t factor in the decision Elian Leyva had another great outing in the Chinese Professional Baseball League with Rakuten Monkeys. The right-hander from Mayabeque, Cuba tossed seven innings of four hit ball and only gave a run, all while striking out eight with his blazing two seamer.

Rakuten downed Fubon 2-1. After two starts with the big club Leyva sports a 1-0 record, a dazzling 2.77 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and has struck out 13 batters in 13 innings. The hurler also has two quality starts and would have two wins if not for the terrible run support he receives.

In the KBO Guillermo Heredia hit a three-run bomb in the seventh inning to propel the SSG Landers to a 5-3 victory over the KT Wiz. The outfielder collected two hits on the evening and also scored a run for the defending champions. Heredia is now second amongst foreign players in the circuit in batting average (.368) and runs batted in (23).

In Japan Ariel Martinez hit a double as a pinch-hitter in the Nippon Ham Fighters’ 3-1 loss to the Seibu Lions at Tokorozawa’s Belluna Dome. His average rose to .231.

Raidel Martínez suffered his first setback of the year after allowing two unearned runs on three hits without retiring a batter in the Chunichi Dragons’ 8-7 loss against the Hanshin Tigers. The right-hander from Pinar del Río, Cuba also issued a walk in the game. His record now stands at 0-1 and his ERA at 0.00.
