Four Cubans elected to play in the Mexican League All-Star Game

A total of four Cubans were chosen to participate in the All-Star Game of the Mexican Baseball League to be held in Tabasco this coming June 18th. The league is divided into two teams for this game, the North Zone team and the South Zone team.

Two Cuban players were elected to the team from the North Zone, they are Félix Pérez from the Toros de Tijuana and Henry Urrutia from the Saraperos de Saltillo. Félix Pérez is currently the league’s home run leader with 14 and is second in RBIs with 38, is also tied with two players for second in the circuit in runs scored with 35. Henry Urrutia in his own right has hit 8 homers and although he is hitting a pedestrian .273 in this hitters league has also driven in 25 runs on the campaign.

For South Zone, Roel Santos from the Olmecas de Tabasco and Yadir Drake from the Leones de Yucatán were elected to the squad. Santos is second in triples in the league with 3. The Granma, Cuba native has collected 30 hits in 118 at-bats on the season, with 9 doubles, one home run and thirteen RBIs. Santos has also stolen four bases on the season. Yadir Drake is having another good year with the Leones de Yucatan . “La Pantera” as he is known by the Cuban faithful sports .416 OBP via 41 hits and 21 walks. The outfielder is hitting .320 with two longballs, 23 RBIs and has scored 18 runs.

Two very notable snubs for this game are those of Peter O’Brien of the Pericos de Puebla and Yoennis Yera of the Olmecas de Tabasco. The Cuban- American O’Brien is having one of the best seasons of his career. The slugger is second in OPS with 1.195, in home runs with 11, seventh in RBIs with 30, second in SLG with .762 and fifth in the LMB in batting with .373 average. Yera is the league leader in WHIP with 0.97 ans is 5th in ERA (2.06). Yera has also won three games and lost one The southpaw only given up nine runs all season. Yera has struck out 39 in 39.1 innings pitched this year.
