Lázaro Blanco signs with Caracas. (+Winter League News)

Minutes after being released by the Venados de Mazatlán, Cuban right-hander Lázaro Blanco was signed by the Leones del Caracas to reinforce their pitching staff. In 12 starts with the Mexican ballclub Blanco posted a 1-4 record and 5.63 earned run average. Blanco is represented by the renowned agent Carlos Pérez who is aptly nicknamed the ,” Scott Boras of the Caribbean”.

In the Dominican Republic Yunesky Maya is scheduled to make his first start of the winter with the Águilas Cibaeñas. The righty from Pinar del Río, Cuba has a 22-21 record in 10 winter league seasons and a 2.79 ERA. Maya has also been pitcher of the year in the LIDOM in 2011 and 2015. Expect the hurler to be a major cog for the Águilas in their playoff push.

In Nicaragua German Mesa returns to manage the Gigantes de Rivas. The ex-Cuban League legend managed Rivas to second place finishes in the LBPN in 2014 and 2016. Mesa has a record of 123-99 in his time in the Nicaraguan winter circuit. In Cuba the one-time fabled shortstop won a championship in 2010 with Havana’s Industriales.
