Miguel Romero will take the mound in Venezuela’s semifinal game of the Serie del Caribe against the Curaçao Suns. Coming off a no-hitter of Nicaragua the team from the South American country is looking to make its second straight final in the tournament.
Romero was splendid in the Tiburones first game in the series, a 3-1 win over the Tigres del Licey of the Dominican Republic in an epic match up. The right-hander from Guantánamo, Cuba who hadn’t pitched in over a month held the DR bats to one run on five hits and fanned three. The hurler used an array of pitches to keep the potent Dominican bats at bay.

When I asked him what his plan was against the team from the against a potent Curaçao lineup he had this to say,” The attack plan is going to be the same as what I did against the Dominican team, go out and attack them, always look to throw the first pitch for strike and get the first out of every inning.
The right-hander is no stranger to big games having pitched in now a semifinal of a World Baseball Classic and a Serie del Caribe,” I think that is something good that is happening in my career. I never predict things. Things happen because they have to happen.”
The 29-year-old also has the potential to unleash a mid 90’s fastball at any given time. With the inclusion of Romero in the World Classic Classic, Cuba had a one of strongest bullpens in the event and it showed as it reached the semifinals of the tournament for the second time in its history. The righty was the anchor of the Cuban pitching staff leading the WBC in wins (2), strikeouts (13) and placing in the top three in ERA (2.08) en route to all-tournament honors.
With Romero ready to go and rested, Curaçao has a tall order ahead of them if they want to put runs on the board. Venezuela is looking to win its first Serie del Caribe title since 2009 and the Cuban is first step in the quest for Ozzie Guillen and company. Tonight at 8:30 PM at loanDepot Park expect to see a focused La Guaira squad to come out ready to handle their business.
