Victor Mesa Jr. (22) signed out of Cuba in 2018 and has steadily climbed the minor league ranks each season, showcasing his talent at every level. In 2023, playing in Double-A with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, he hit .242 with 18 HRs, 76 RBIs, and 16 stolen bases in 19 attempts. His 18 homers nearly doubled the total from his previous three seasons (11) combined. He hit for the cycle on April 18th and had 30 multi-hit games.
This offseason, Victor achieved a significant milestone by proudly becoming an American Citizen, marking a remarkable personal achievement off the field. His performance in 2023 earned him a spot on the 40-man roster. Looking ahead to the 2024 season, he may see time in Triple-A, with a potential call-up to the big leagues on the horizon.
Victor what did you work on during the offseason?
Running a lot of the track, being in centerfield I would want to be in shape. Hitting, all that with Sosa, my hitting coach, and the guys with the Marlins. I came earlier before Spring Training started to get ready.
How has Sosa helped you develop as a hitter? How did that help you last year in Double A?
I’ve hit with him since I’ve been in the United States. He’s helped me a lot. He’s been like a mentor, a coach and a friend. I am grateful for him and what he’s taught me. It’s not just Sosa, but the guys here too. My dad too has given me a lot of advice too. I’m grateful for them. Lets keep working for one goal.
Being that your dad is a legend in Cuban baseball is there pressure for you to perform and make the big leagues?
Not really, I dont really think about it. It’s more about myself and what I can do. I know if I’m 100% I know what I can do. I don’t pressure on my mind, I know what my dad did but now it’s my time and my turn. I don’t think much about what he did its more about how I can use the advice he gave me to use in the games.
What is your goal for this season and where will you start?
I don’t know where I’m going to start. I don’t really care too much about it. When I go on the field I give 100% , stay healthy and see what god has for me.
