Two days ago Vladimir Gutierrez saw his first live action on the mound in a live BP with Miami Marlins at 10:15 AM at the team’s spring training complex in Jupiter, Florida. The righty faced four batters various times, three of them being Tim Anderson, Christian Bethancourt and Victor Mesa JR. The hurler threw between 25-30 pitches and dominated for the most part, suffering only a solo-shot by Mesa.
The recently signed Gutierrez has good shot at taking the third or fourth slot in the rotation behind Jesús Luzardo, Eury Pérez and Braxton Garrett. During the batting practice the right-hander show very good command and control by hitting precise locations.
During his last healthy season in 2021 when he went 9-6 with a 4.74 ERA and was a candidate for the Rookie of Year with Cincinnati Reds. With the hard work he has put in this offseason look for a comeback season from Gutierrez and in his hometown of Miami.

Vlady, how did you feel today?
I felt pretty good, you know, my arm feels healthy.
How was your velocity today?
I don’t know, I didn’t ask much about the speed. I didn’t really focus much on my velocity because I know it’s there. I only focused on location my first BP, showing them that I am 100% ready. You know, focus and location is the most important thing of all right now.
Tell me about the match up with Victor Mesa Jr during the live BP.
(Laughs) he punished me again there, he hit a homerun of me. I threw him a fastball inside and he crushed it.
Have the team told you when you are going to pitch in a game?
On Sunday I have two innings scheduled against Washington.
