Lourdes Gurriel Jr.’s Historic Start in Diamondbacks’ Opening Series

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. made history during the Diamondbacks’ opening series against the Colorado Rockies.

Following his All-Star season with the Diamondbacks in 2023, where he hit 24 home runs, Gurriel Jr. re-signed with the team on a three-year, $42 million deal.

In the first game of the season, Gurriel showed his impact immediately. He hit his first home run of 2024 and drove in 5 runs, in the Diamondbacks’ dominant 16-1 victory over the Rockies. Gurriel’s 5 RBI in 3 innings set a new record for the Diamondbacks on Opening Day.

But Gurriel’s historic achievements continued. In the following two games, he extended his home run streak, becoming the first Cuban and Diamondbacks player to hit three home runs in the first three games of the season. His 8 RBI in three games also set a new team record. Although he didn’t hit a home run in the fourth game, Gurriel added two more RBI to his Diamondbacks record.
