Yariel Rodriguez took the mound for the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday, April 13th, at Rogers Centre for his MLB career debut. His journey to this point was unprecedented, even by the standards of Cubans who often face challenges when leaving and defecting from Cuba.
Rodriguez began his career in Cuba with the Ganaderos de Camaguey at the age of 18, showcasing his talent with a 2.35 ERA in 38.1 innings as a rookie in the Cuban National Series. Over the following six seasons, he would also play for the Lenadores de Las Tunas and Gallos de Sancti Spiritus, while also representing Cuba in international events. Throughout his Cuban National Series career, he posted a 3.30 ERA with 357 strikeouts in 464.1 innings.

In 2020, Rodriguez made the move to Japan, joining the Chunichi Dragons in Nippon Professional Baseball. There, he emerged as a top relief pitcher, with a remarkable 1.15 ERA in 2022 and a career 3.03 ERA with 188 strikeouts in 175.1 innings over three seasons.
His standout performance as Cuba’s ace in the 2023 World Baseball Classic further solidified his reputation. Yariel started the first game of the World Baseball Classic for Cuba against the Netherlands. He pitched 4 innings, allowed 3 hits, a walk and a run while striking out 6. He also started for Cuba against Australia for a bid in the WBC semi finals in Miami. In 3.1 innings he allowed 2 hits, a run, 5 walks and struck out 4 in Cuba’s 4-3 win. Following Cuba’s elimination from the tournament, Rodriguez made the life-changing decision to defect from his homeland.
Despite contractual obligations with the Chunichi Dragons, Rodriguez remained determined in his pursuit of an MLB career. He did not return to Japan and trained in the Dominican Republic. He was unable to sign with another team because of his NPB contract. Rodriguez focused on refining his skills and maintaining his readiness for the Major League opportunity. He was released by the Chunichi Dragons on October 5th, becoming one of the top international players available during the offseason.
He showcased versatility as a pitcher, having excelled as a relief pitcher in Japan while also demonstrating the potential to thrive as a starter. Rodriguez’s pitching style is a unique blend of Cuban flair and Japanese techniques, honed through his experiences in both countries. His repertoire includes his two main pitches, the fastball and slider, along with the splitter, sinker, and curveball. This combination of skills and adaptability made Rodriguez an enticing free agent.
He signed a five-year, $32 million deal with the Toronto Blue Jays on February 9th, 2024. Although his Spring Training was limited due to back issues, Rodriguez showcased his talent in Triple-A, striking out 10 in 6.1 innings while allowing only one hit and three walks.
Called up to the Majors, he made his debut as a starter against the Colorado Rockies on April 13th. Rodriguez displayed flashes of brilliance, recording his first career strikeout against Ezequiel Tovar in a 1-2-3 first inning. In the dugout, Yariel remained focused and determined to help his team win. Despite allowing two runners on base in the second inning, Rodriguez managed to escape the inning unscathed, showing emotion as he returned to the dugout. He finished the game allowing four hits, one run, two walks, and struck out 6 in 3.2 innings.
As Rodriguez walked to the dugout, surrounded by the cheers of fans and the support of his teammates, it became clear that his journey has only just begun—from Cuba, to Japan, and now the Major Leagues. His path, marked by challenges and sacrifices, embodies the struggles that many Cuban players face in pursuit of their dreams. Yet, through it all, Rodriguez has remained resilient, honing his craft and awaiting his moment.
