Yariel Rodríguez was put on the 15-day injured list by the Toronto Blue Jays today. After the start this Monday night the right-hander ended up feeling discomfort in his back, a discomfort very similar to what he felt in Spring Training.
Because of that injury he was only able to make two starts in the preseason and was then assigned to Triple A to get in game shape. Everything seems to indicate that it will be a similar recovery process to that of the previous injury, initially he will recover at the Blue Jays Complex in Dunedin.
On Monday the Cuban did not have a good outing against the Kansas City Royals at a Rogers Center in Toronto with 29,879 in attendance. For the second consecutive outing, the native of Camagüey, Cuba did not have his best stuff. Rodríguez worked three and two-thirds innings, gave up six hits, allowed three runs (two of them earned), walked three and struck out a batter.
Génesis Cabrera replaced him in the fourth inning after walking two, allowing two singles and allowing his second earned run of the night. Rodríguez left runners on the corners upon his departure and Cabrera retired Vinnie Pasquantino to close the stanza.

On the night the righty threw a total of 82 pitches, 50 of them for strikes (61%). He tossed 22 fastballs (27%), 26 sliders (32%), 17 sinkers (21%), 13 curves (16%) and four splitters (5%). He threw 50% of fastballs for strikes (11 of 22).
A total of three of the 13 curves he threw went for strikes (23%) , while he was 11 of 26 with the slider (42%). Without a doubt, it was not his night despite having better velocity than in the previous outing, but his command and control in part were off on the evening.
Rodríguez topped out at 97.6 MPH with his fastball and averaged 93.9 MPH on the night. His curve reached 79.2 MPH on the gun, while his slider was at 86.4 MPH, he hit 95 MPH with his sinker and 89.5 MPH with the splitter.
After four starts in the big leagues the hurler has worked 15.1 innings and has allowed seven earned runs (ERA: 4.11). So far he has walked eight and opponents have hit .302 against him. He has struck out 16 and sports a record of 0-1 in his brief career as a major league pitcher.
