The Giants have placed designated hitter Jorge Soler on the 10-day IL retroactive to May 5, due to a shoulder strain. San Francisco has called up Heliot Ramos from Triple-A Sacramento to take the Cuban slugger’s roster spot.
Soler signed a three-year, $42MM free agent deal during the offseason. The Giants signed the outfielder in hopes that he would provide some power that the team’s lineup was sorely lacking. The Cuban hit 36 homers for the Marlins last season.

While Soler is tied for the team lead in home runs with five, he’s slashing .202/.294/.361 through 136 plate appearances overall. Before the injury he was mired in a slump that saw him hitting .130 over the last seven games and three hits in his last ten trips to the plate.
Giants manager Bob Melvin had this to say about the injury, “Every time he’s been in the cage and tried to swing, it has bothered him so there’s no way it’s a couple days away,” Giants manager Bob Melvin said. “We’ll try to let him rest and get past this thing.”
Ramos in his own right saw action last year hitting .179 in 25 games with the team and is hitting .200 with an RBI so far this season in five trips to the plate.
