Alejandro Rivero has had a successful first half of the season in his inaugural year in the Liga Mexicana de Béisbol with the Dorados de Chihuahua. In 29 games with the ballclub he is slashing .340/.391/.505/.891 with two homers and 10 RBIs.
After three years in college and one year in the collegiate summer league with Winchester and St. Thomas in which he hit a combined .316 , but was not drafted Rivero then decided to try his hand in an independent circuit in 2021. The slugger signed with the Boise SkyHawks of the Pioneer League, which is widely known to be a league for prospects looking to sign with MLB organizations. In his one season in that circuit he hit a robust .352 with 20 homers, 70 RBIs and slashed .401/.668/1.069.
This performance earned a contract with Chicago Cubs organization. In 2022 with the Windy City’s Rookie and Low-A ball clubs he hit .227 with three jacks and 16 runs batted, but was released after the season. Last season he has looked impressive with the lumber with York hit .272 with eight longballs, 43 runs batted in and slashed .338/.387/.725 in 119 games with the Revolution.
Based on his performance this year look for the young Cuban to play winter ball this and maybe even be in the cross hairs of in Asian team in the near future. For Rivero the sky is the limit.
Tell us about your first season in the Liga Mexicana de Béisbol?
It has been a great experience since the league has a high talent level. I was able to prepare well in the offseason and I am doing quite well. My goal is to finish the season strong.
You played Serie Nacional, Minor Leagues, Independent League. What do you notice is different about those leagues compared to this one?
There is a good competition here and a big pool of experienced players, many of them have played in the Major Leagues for several seasons. I feel that the league has plenty of talent, comparing it to the minor leagues it would be Triple A.
This year you have played five positions, the four infield and left field. How do you focus each day to face this challenge?
Since this offseason I have been preparing myself to play both in the infield and outfield. I have been taking repetitions every day in the field during batting practice.
Of all the positions you play, which one do you like the most and in which do you feel most comfortable playing?
The one I like the most, is the one I have played since I was little, shortstop. It’s also the one I feel most comfortable with, but I can say the same about third and second base.
Do you have any goals for this season?
First of all, qualify for the playoffs with the team and finish the season in a strong fashion.
Do you intend to play winter?
Yes, of course. I hope to get a contract with a Caribbean team and continue playing ball all year.
