Yesterday, Cuban catcher Edgar Quero was selected as the Player of the Week from June 3 to 9 of the Southern League, a Double A level circuit. The Cienfuegos, Cuba native had a luxurious week at the plate against the Tennessee Smokies (Chicago Cubs) and as expected waiting took this award.
He played six games from Tuesday to Sunday and had multihits in all of them. In total he posted a slash line of .619/.704/1,143/1,847, with 13 hits in 21 at-bats, two doubles, three home runs, seven runs scored, five walks and five RBIs. . Quero is currently riding a 10-game hitting streak, over this stretch he is hitting .526, including eight multi-hit games. The slugger has also reached base at least once in his last 17 contests.
After 50 games played he is hitting .273 with 17 extra-base hits (7 2B and 10 HR) and 42 hits in total. In the month of June he averaged .586, with three home runs, and six RBIs. In April he hit .279 (3 2B, 5 HR, 21 RBI) and in May just .167 (1 2B, 2 HR, 15 RBI). His 42 RBIs leads the Southern League, and he is also second in home runs (10), fifth in OPS (.838) and sixth in slugging percentage (.471).
It is the second time winning the player of the month in the minor leagues, Quero was also won the award in May 2022 with the Inland Empires 66ers (Class A, Angels). The signal caller signed for $200,000 with the Angels shortly before his 18th birthday due to the pandemic. In 2023 he was traded to the Chicago White Sox, the same year in which he participated in the Future Stars game. Quero is definitely the catcher of the future for the pale holes.
