Cuban-American J.D. Martínez was named the National League Player of Week for this last week after torturing NL pitching to the tune of a .450 batting average. Martínez also slugged three longballs, three doubles, nine runs batted in.
The native of Miami also posted a 1.050 slugging percentage and 1.643 OPS. Martínez who has been an All-Star for the last three seasons, has also gone yard 323 times during his 14 years on the grand stage. Martínez not only has that many homers, over 1,500 hits and a .537 slugging percentage.
Martínez has also won three Silver Sluggers, two in the same season and has been a six-time All-Star over his long and storied career. The Mets have gotten their money’s worth so far with Martínez, at 1-year, 12 million dollars the signing of the slugger has definitely been at a bargain.
Martínez has been one of the architects of the team’s six -game winning streak, while also hitting .303 over the last month. On the season Martínez hits .292 with eight homers, 27 RBIs and is slashing. 360/.512/.872. Could the 36-year-old be in line for his fourth straight All-Star appearance? Only time will tell us that.
