Guillermo García, grandson of Cuban General and Commander of the Revolution, Guillermo García Frías, arrived yesterday in the Dominican Republic in search of a signing with a professional baseball organization. The news was first reported by the colleague Francys Romero.
The 24-year-old played two seasons (2022-23) in the Chunichi Dragons farm system in the Nippon League where he debuted with the big ball club in 2022 hitting .111 in nine at-bats. In 35 games last season with the Dragons’ junior club he hit .235 with two longballs, 10 runs batted in and slashed .336/.347/.683 , in addition to swatting five doubles and scoring 12 runs.
García has played in three National Series with the Alazanes de Granma in which he has appeared in 65 games posting a career average .179, his best campaign being the 2019-2020 season when he drove in 12 runs in 26 games. His most memorable moment in the Cuban circuit was the decisive hit he hit in the final of the 2021 National Series to leave the Matanzas team on the field and give Granma its third championship in the tournament’s history.
This season with the Quebec Capitales the slugger slashed .299/.381/.438/.819 with four homers and 29 runs batted in over 35 games with the Canadian club. García is looking to exhibit his talents via a few showcases with the intentions of wowing a few scouts and securing a contract with a major league organization. García was on the list given to MLB during the vetoed agreement with the Cuban Federation in 2018.
