On a day when Cuban Legend René Arocha threw out the first pitch in St. Louis, Cuban-American Nolan Arenado led the charge in St. Louis’ 4-0 blanking of the Pirates. The infielder collected two hits in four at-bats and drove in a run for the Redbirds. Another Cuban-American Ryan Fernández also saw action on the day fanning two of three batters he faced.
Arocha he was the first Cubans to flee from the Cuban National Team during an international event in 1991 opting to leave the communist island for freedom and eventually signing with the Cardinals. During his three seasons in St. Louis the right-hander posted an 18-17 record, including an 11-8 rookie season in 1993.
José Iglesias swatted two hits in four trips to the and knocked in a run to do his part in New York’s extra-inning 2-1 win over Washington. The Cuban has been a sparkplug for the team from Gotham this season hitting a .323 on the campaign. The infielder has stabilized the second base position for the team.
