Erlys Casanova is masterful in a La Guaira win. (+Cuban Winter League Report)

Erlys Casanova tossed five solid innings in which he only yielded two hits and earned run, while also striking out three in a La Guaira 5-2 win over the Caribes de Anzoategui. The right-hander from Pinar del Río, Cuba leaves his initial start with a 1.30 ERA.

Leonys Martín helped his countrymen and teammate’s cause with a run-scoring single in three trips to the plate. After a slow start the outfielder is starting to heat up with the bat and drove in the first run of his LVBP career. Martín figures to be a big bat in the team’s lineup for the rest of the winter.

After an eventful offseason in which the Tiburones have brought in plenty of high-profile free agents the team has started the season with two losses in its first four games. Expect the offense to rev-up with the addition of Yurisbel Gracial in November and Art Charles in December.
