José Barrero has had a coming out party in the Choque de Gigantes in Miami. The Cuban infielder has been a key hitter for the Estrellas Orientales in the tournament hitting a robust .429. Barrero who is a free agent is looking to exhibit his talents in order to earn a signing in either Asia or MLB.
Barrero was a high-profile international signing by the Cincinnati in 2017 when he signed for 5 million dollars. The native of Havana debuted in 2020 with the Reds in 2020 but in his four years on the grand stage he slashed .186/.242/.255/.497 leading to his release in 2023. He was then claimed by the Texas Rangers and in 49 games at Round Rock (AAA) he hit .188 with six long balls and 25 RBIs.
The young slugger elected to become a free agent this offseason and returned to the Estrellas Orientales in order to hopefully catch the eye of a team. Barrero hopes to build off the momentum of this tournament.
What does it mean to be here again?
Well, first of all, thank Jesus Christ for having the opportunity to be here and represent the Estrellas. It feels good, it feels incredible to be able to represent a team from the Dominican Republic in the tournament.
Tell me how the season has gone so far, do you feel good playing in the Dominican Republic, what do you hope for the future.
100%. As I say, they are giving me the opportunity in the Dominican Republic. Working on what I can control and giving 100% to help the team in whatever way I can.
You are a free agent, what is your goal at LIDOM and do you have any offers on the table?
Well, I don’t really worry about those things, I leave that more to my agent. I play ball, work hard, control what I can control and everything comes in its time.
Fernando Tatis is one of the best hitting coaches outside of the MLB system. Have you tried to work long term with Fernando to improve your hitting?
Yes, of course, we are working and making many adjustments. Also with the rest of the hitting coaches, and yes: he has been helping me a lot. As I always say, working so that God does his work.
How do you feel returning to Miami for this tournament?
It feels good, the food is very delicious, the weather… everything. It feels amazing.
