The Houston Astros ink two Cuban pitchers in the International Signing Period.

Yesterday the Houston Astros signed two heralded Cuban pitching prospects to bolster the number of Cubans in their farm system to over 15 players from the island and exhausting their bonus pool of 5.64 million. With the signings of right-handers Robier Hernández and Alex González to close the international signing period.

González, who is the the son legendary Cuban lefty Norberto González signed for a 100,000 dollar bonus with the team from Space City. The 18-year-old hurler throws a fastball between 93-96 miles per hour. Standing at 6’3 and weighing and weighing approximately 200 pound the Cuban has an impressive physique on the mound.

In the case of Hernández, he is the brother of former Cleveland Guardians signee Robert Hernández. The 17-year-old from Sancti Spíritus, Cuba stands about 6’4 with a very live fastball that clocks in between 91-94 mph. The ex-U15 national team pitcher signed for 170K and has the physical makings of a starter.

Houston has always been a place for Cuban talent. From Yuli Gurriel to Yordan Álvarez, Cubans have played a pivotal role in the success of the squad from Texas. With the acquisition of these two young flamethrowers the Astros hope to develop down the line two staples in the rotation for years to come.
