FEPCUBE made another key edition to its roster today when the announced outfielder Yoelqui Céspedes would join the squad prior to its game this Saturday against the Miami-Dade College Sharks. The toolsy Cuban was released by the White Sox last March.
Yoenis Céspedes’ younger brother abandoned the Cuban National Team during an incursion in the Can-AM League and worked out in the Bahamas until he was declared a free agent by MLB in 2020, signing for a 2 million dollar bonus. In his three seasons in the Sox’s farm system he slashed .253/.331/.410/.741 while also hitting 35 longballs and driving in 123 runs.
Although he has plenty of raw power the native of Yara, Cuba struck out an eye-popping 379 times in 1,168 at-bats during his time in Chicago. With this release it can be said that Céspedes was one of the biggest busts ever for the team in international free agency.
After his release Céspedes signed with the Fargo-Moorehead Redhawks of the American Association’s going 0-for-11 and striking out six times before being released by the independent squad. The slugger will look to showcase his talents with FEPCUBE in order to secure a signing with a team in a summer league.
