On February 17 of this year, the Acereros de Monclova announced the signing of Cuban infielder Diosbel Arias for the 2025 season of the Liga Mexicana de Béisbol. This will be Arias’ second campaign in the Aztec circuit, after playing with the Diablos Rojos de México City in 2024 in which he won a title with the league’s signature club.
With the Diablos Rojos he played in 47 games, in which hit .328 swatting 57 hits in 174 trips to the plate. Fourteen of his hits were doubles and he went yard five times , in addition to driving in 23 runs and scoring another 41 during the regular season of the LMB.
Arias comes from playing in the Liga ARCO Mexicana del Pacífico this winter with two teams, he started the season with the Tomateros de Culiacán and finished the campaign with Sultanes de Monterrey seeing action in a total of 42 games. Between both squads, he hit .206 with 12 runs batted in and scored 11 runs, while also drawing 12 walks and striking out 34 times.
How did you take the news of that México City was relinquishing your rights in the LMB?
The news that the Diablos Rojos would give up my rights this year took me a little by surprise, but Acereros are a great team that is giving me a good opportunity and for a player like me the important thing.
After being crowned champion in 2024 with the Diablos Rojos, how are you preparing for this new campaign?
I am training extra hard, doing the gym work and getting resting in anticipation of returning to Mexico for the preseason.
At 28 years of age, do you consider that there is still a possibility of returning to the major league system or do you feel better in the Caribbean Leagues?
I would like to return to MLB and we will continue fighting to do so, but in Mexico they also play hard and I feel good there.
Would you be available to play with Cuba in the World Classic?
Representing your country, I think, is something that every athlete wants. Who if I will get the opportunity to do so in the near future.
