Another Cuban closes the door on the Cuban Baseball Federation. Adrián Morejón, one of the most talented pitchers in the Major Leagues, confirmed to me yesterday via Twitter (X) that he has no interest in playing for Cuba in the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
The San Diego Padres left-hander was emerging as a coveted pitcher in Team Asere’s rotation, but his decision follows Jorge Soler’s refusal, who also will not wear the national team uniform either in next year’s tournament.
Meanwhile, the Cuban Federation continues its search for names to prepare a competitive team for the WBC. They have not yet announced the manager that will lead the team, but they have contacted players from the MLB and the minors in the hopes of rebuilding their image after recent disappointments in tournaments like the Premier 12.
In the 2024 season, Morejón pitched 63.2 innings, striking out 71 batters and walking just 21. He finished with a 3-2 record and two saves, making it clear that he is a pitcher on the rise. The left-hander is looking to expand his role with the team on the upcoming season.
So far, five players signed to Major League Baseball teams have said yes to Team Asere: Yoan Moncada, Andy Ibáñez, Andy Pagés, Daysbel Hernández, and Ernesto Martínez, who is expected to make his MLB debut this year. It remains to be seen how many more sign up… and how many more decline.
