Onelki García has signed with the Piratas de Campeche of the Liga Mexicana de Béisbol. The left-hander participated in spring training for this edition of the LMB with the Charros de Jalisco; however, he did not make the final roster.
At Galeón, García joins veteran Yunesky Maya, who has had his ups and downs during the tournament. The hurler is coming off a pitching stint in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League (LVBP) with the Navegantes del Magallanes, with whom he only appeared in four games, earning no wins or losses.
In his short time with the LVBP, he pitched only 3.2 innings, allowing eight hits and one earned run, for a 2.45 ERA. He also struck out four batters and didn’t walk anyone. García pitched in the Major Leagues with the Kansas City Royals and the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he made five appearances (one as a starter) and posted a 13.50 earned run average over that span.
In his three previous seasons in the Mexican League, he has a total of four wins and two losses in 19 games (16 of them as a starter). He has also struck out 40 and walked 21. In 78.1 innings of work, he has a 3.91 ERA, allowing 35 runs (34 earned) and a 1.24 WHIP. This will be a new opportunity to reestablish himself as a starting pitcher for the 35-year-old from Guantanamo, Cuba, who still maintains good velocity and control. García was activated by the team tonight.
