Yariel Rodríguez: “I just want to represent Cuba again in the WBC. “

After struggling as a starter his first season in the majors,Yariel Rodríguez has come into his own as a reliever in his sophomore year on the grand stage. In 54 games this season he has a 2-1 record, 3.39 earned run average, two saves and 13 holds, making him one of the team’s top relievers.

In 61 innings pitched he has struck out 54 batters, sports a 1.10 WHIP and opponents hit a paltry .195 against the flamethrowing right-hander. Before defecting to the United States during the World Baseball Classic he served in this same reliever function with the Chunichi Dragons of the NPB, even winning the reliever of the year in the Central League during the 2022 season.

The expectations were high for the pitcher from Camagüey, Cuba after signing a 4-year, 32 million dollar contract with Jays in 2024. Rodríguez was expected to come in a solidify himself as a front end of the rotation starter, although that did not happen the righty has still established himself as a key fireman for the Canadian squad.

You’re returning to the middle reliever role. Do you feel more comfortable in that role?

Yes, yes. I already worked in that role in Cuba, and I was also in that role in Japan. I prefer being a starter, but I’ve had better results as a reliever than as a starter.

What adjustments did you make to feel more comfortable returning to that role?

Well, yes. I had to make a lot of adjustments because I was switched to relief at a moment’s notice, and I wasn’t prepared to take on that role. But I prepared myself mentally, and we did what was necessary on the field to try to do things well.

You’ve closed several games this year. Would you like to be a closer in the near future?

Yes, of course. For me, pitching the ninth inning would be a good option. I like the game situation and the adrenaline rush that comes with pitching that inning.

If the opportunity to be a starter again arises in the future, would you like to return to that role?

What I’ve always liked is being a starter, so if they give me another opportunity, of course I’d like to.

You’ve expressed your intention to play for Cuba in the World Baseball Classic. Have you had contact with any federation officials?

No, I haven’t had any contact. I just want to represent Cuba again in the event.

Could we see you playing in a winter league after the season ends?

I don’t think I’m interested in playing in the winter league right now, although I might be in the future.

Do you have any goals for what is left of the year?

Of course, the goal is to support the team in any way I can. I want to go to the mound to give my best, and help lead the team to a playoff berth.
