The St. Louis Cardinals are calling up utilityman Cesar Prieto to the major leagues. Prieto, 26, signed with the Orioles in 2022 after leaving Team Cuba at the airport in Miami, in May 2021 right before the Pre-Olympic tournament . The colleague Francys Romero was the first to report the transaction.
The native of Cienfuegos, Cuba was one of the pieces in the trade that sent Jack Flaherty to the Orioles in 2023. He should be activated tomorrow in Cincinnati. He’s hit .293 with 44 HR in four minor league seasons with Baltimore’s and the St. Louis’ farm clubs. His ability to play various infield positions should add to his availability during games.
When Prieto sees his first action the mark will stand at 33 Cubans that have seen action on the season, tying the all-time set in 2022 and 2024, while also leaving the Largest of the Antilles one player short of breaking their all-time mark. This season the talented infielder is slashing .295/.358/.448/.807 with nine longballs and 62 runs batted in over 107 games with the Memphis Redbirds of the International League.
