The Mets place Luis Robert on IL and claim Andy Ibáñez off waivers.

With the recent injuries on their roster the New York Mets have placed Luis Robert on the injured list and have claimed his countrymen Andy Ibáñez off waivers from the Athletics, who was waived by the team earlier this week and could provide much needed depth for the team from Gotham.

Ibáñez joins the Mets after being claimed off waivers .The native of the Isle of Youth changes teams quickly after being designated for assignment by the Athletics. Ibáñez must join the active roster because he is out of options). The utilityman can play 2B, 3B, 1B, and the corners in the outfield. 

The versatile Ibáñez has played 1,000 innings at second base in his MLB career. With Oakland the Cuban hit ..118 during his brief stint in Oakland  this season. Ibáñez is coming off two modest offensive seasons  including 2023 when he registered a 103 wRC+.

With the injuries  to Francisco(Lindor Jorge Polanco and Luis Robert Jr.)  the Mets need for infield depth and this move also gives them greater flexibility off the bench and provides a new opportunity for Ibáñez on a team in need of functional pieces.

Robert Jr. was placed on the 10-day Injured List due to back discomfort. He had been dealing with the issue for several days and recently underwent an MRI. A situation that was already impacting his playing time and causing a decline in his offensive performance. Robert Jr Just had two hits in his last 19 at-bats Current slash line of .224/.327/.329.

“La Pantera” as he is known by the Cuban faithful has a recurring history of injuries. In recent years the outfielder has had difficulty staying consistent on the field  in recent seasons. At 28 years old, his talent has never been in doubt, but his health remains the determining factor.

The Mets now lose another key piece of their lineup, which is already missing several important players. Those loses have seen the team from Gotham struggle to a 10-21 start the season putting their manager’s job in danger. Will Luis Robert Jr. finally be able to stay healthy and reach his true ceiling in MLB?
