Anthony Núñez is the midst of his rookie season with the Baltimore Orioles, but has hit a rough patch after a good start to the campaign in the team’s bullpen. The native of Miami, Fla has a 9.45 earned run average in his last seven games.
Although his ERA has jumped to 4.26 on the year, Núñez has has fanned 21 battera in 19 innings pitched. The right-hander is also amongst the team leader in holds with six and sports 1.21 WHIP, while hitters only hit .216 against him.
Last week Núñez returned home to pitch against the Miami Marlins with birds. Even though he’s having his difficulties today expect right to turn his season around and continue to be a big part of the Orioles relieving corps.
Anthony, you’ve hit a rough patch lately after a good start. What adjustments do you think that you need to make?
I think it’s just staying consistent with the game plan, committing to it even when I have a couple bad outings.
What has stood out about MLB hitters in your time here?
They have a plan and they stick to that plan. And it’s just about committing to my plan as well. And it’s just about committing to my plan as well. Even though it doesn’t go my way sometimes I just need to keep committing to it.
There’s another Cuban on his team, his name is Yennier Cano. Talk about your relationship and has he given you any tips since he’s been in the building for a long time?
Yeah, I mean, a lot of guys have given advice, they’re very wise. I try to seek a lot of knowledge from them and just learn from everybody in the bullpen, not only him, but definitely he’s been great.
You’re a guy from Miami. How does it feel to come home and pitch in this stadium?
It’s awesome. I mean, seeing all the family here during the games, seeing them before the games, after the games, it’s been awesome. It’s been a dream.
Any goals for what’s left of the season?
Get as many out as possible without giving up any runs.
