Cuban prospect Kevin Álvarez (Houston Astros) was selected as the Carolina League Player of the Week at the Class A level of Minor League Baseball. The native of Matanzas earned the honor, a well-deserved recognition for his outstanding performance during the past week of competition.
Álvarez, who is an outfielder from Colón, Matanzas, Cuba plays for the Houston Astros’ Class A affiliate. The young slugger was on fire at the plate during the most recent series when the Fayetteville Woodpeckers. Fayetteville faced the Hill City Howlers in a five-game series last week, and the No. 3 prospect in our sister page Pelota Cubana USA’s rankings was nearly unstoppable at the plate throughout the series.
Álvarez swatted multiple hits in every game he played in the series. Over 21 at-bats, he collected 12 hits. The Cuban outfielder scored seven runs and also drove in three more for his team. Most notably, he smashed six doubles over the week, bringing his season total to 11. With that performance, Álvarez reached 14 multi-hit games during the 2026 season.
Álvarez entered the series hitting .246 and finished it with a .282 average. His on-base percentage rose to .335 while his slugging percentage climbed to .474. So far this season, Álvarez has displayed impressive offensive consistency, proving that his promotion to this level has been well deserved.
The young slugger has hit five home runs and driven in 21 runs for the Fayetteville Woodpeckers this campaign making his power elite for his stage of development, and he currently owns an .809 OPS with 18 extra-base hits on the season.
